Board-Certified Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons

Schiffman Oral Surgery is led by Dr. Leonard Schiffman and Dr. Michael Schiffman, both board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeons.

Oral and maxillofacial surgery is a dental specialty focused on surgical treatment of conditions involving the teeth, jaws and associated structures. Our practice performs a broad range of procedures, from common wisdom tooth extractions to more complex dental implant and bone-grafting treatment.

For many patients, seeing a specialist also means having access to advanced anesthesia options when appropriate.

Wisdom Teeth Removal Near Valley Stream & Lynbrook

Wisdom tooth surgery is a major part of our practice.

Third molars usually develop during the teenage and young-adult years. When there is inadequate room in the jaw, they may become impacted, emerge only partially, or develop at an unfavorable angle.

Potential concerns involving wisdom teeth can include:

  • Recurrent gum inflammation
  • Infection
  • Decay that is difficult to restore
  • Damage to an adjacent tooth
  • Cystic changes in selected cases
  • Difficulty keeping the area clean

Not every wisdom tooth needs to be removed, which is why an appropriate examination is important.

At your consultation, we review your symptoms, health history and imaging and explain whether observation or removal is recommended.

If surgery is planned, we will also review anesthesia options, preoperative instructions and what to expect during recovery.

Dental Implants for Missing Teeth

When a permanent tooth is lost, a dental implant can often be used to support its replacement.

An implant is surgically placed into the jaw and, after appropriate healing, can be restored by your dentist with a replacement tooth.

Our role as oral surgeons includes evaluating the surgical site, reviewing the available bone, placing the implant in an appropriate position and coordinating treatment with your restorative dentist.

Schiffman Oral Surgery currently uses established implant systems from major implant manufacturers and performs associated bone-augmentation procedures when required.

What If There Is Not Enough Bone for an Implant?

Loss of a tooth can be followed by gradual changes in the surrounding jawbone. Some patients therefore require additional bone before or during implant treatment.

Our surgeons perform procedures including:

  • Bone grafting
  • Socket or ridge preservation when appropriate
  • Ridge augmentation
  • Maxillary sinus augmentation

The type and timing of grafting depend on the location of the missing tooth and the amount of existing bone.

Surgical Tooth Removal

Some teeth are better managed by an oral surgeon because of their position, condition or anticipated difficulty of removal.

Examples include:

  • Broken-down or badly fractured teeth
  • Teeth with extensive decay
  • Impacted teeth
  • Failed root canal-treated teeth
  • Teeth associated with significant infection
  • Teeth being removed in preparation for implant treatment
  • Difficult root anatomy
  • Cases in which sedation is desirable

Our surgeons perform extractions using an individualized anesthesia plan based upon the procedure, medical history and patient’s needs.

When appropriate, we can also discuss plans for replacing the tooth before it is removed so that extraction, bone grafting and implant treatment can be coordinated.

Treatment of Dental and Oral Infections

A severely infected tooth or oral abscess can cause significant pain and swelling.

Depending on the cause, treatment may require removal of the source of infection, drainage of an abscess, medication, or a combination of approaches.

Our practice performs both extraction of infected teeth and incision and drainage of oral abscesses when clinically appropriate.

Patients with rapidly increasing facial swelling, difficulty swallowing, difficulty breathing or other concerning symptoms should seek urgent medical evaluation.

Biopsy and Oral Pathology

Your dentist may occasionally identify an unusual bump, ulcer, discoloration or radiographic finding that needs further evaluation.

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are trained to evaluate abnormalities involving both the mouth and jawbones. In selected cases, a small sample of tissue may be removed and sent for microscopic examination.

This can help establish a diagnosis and determine whether additional treatment is necessary.

Orthodontic Exposure of Impacted Teeth

An impacted canine tooth can sometimes be guided into the dental arch rather than removed.

When recommended by the orthodontist, our surgeons can perform an exposure and bonding procedure, during which the impacted tooth is uncovered and an orthodontic attachment is placed.

The orthodontist then uses that attachment to gradually bring the tooth into position.

We coordinate these procedures with the patient’s orthodontist because the surgical and orthodontic portions of treatment work together.

IV Sedation and Anesthesia

It is common for patients to feel nervous about oral surgery, particularly wisdom tooth removal or a more involved surgical procedure.

Our surgeons have advanced anesthesia training and provide IV sedation and general anesthesia in addition to local anesthesia for appropriate patients and procedures.

Before recommending sedation, we review factors such as:

  • Medical history
  • Current medications
  • Allergies
  • Type and duration of surgery
  • Age
  • Previous anesthesia experiences

We will explain your options and provide specific instructions if IV sedation or general anesthesia is planned.

For dental implant patients, we communicate with the restorative dentist so that the surgical and restorative phases of treatment can be planned together.

For orthodontic patients, we work with the orthodontist to coordinate procedures such as exposure of impacted teeth.

You remain a patient of your regular dentist for ongoing routine and restorative dental care.
